Things to do in Derbyshire

The village of Winster is brimming with history much of which you will be able to see as you walk through the narrow streets and explore a village that time has forgotten. WInster has a traditional team of Morris Dancers that perform throughout the summer. In the winter months you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Winster Guisers, a troop of mummers that portray the ancient tale of St. George and the dragon.

At the end of June, the village celebrates the patronal feast of St. John the Baptist in the form of the Winster Wakes, the annual village carnival. In July, many residents open their gardens to the public for one weekend as part of the Secret Gardens of Winster.

The village has two excellent pubs, a post office and village shop. The neighbouring villages also have interesting and individual pubs, namely the Barley Mow at Bonsall, which is famous for Hen Racing and the centre of an imfamous UFO triangle!

The picturesque spa town of Matlock is five miles away, and Bakewell, famous for Bakewell Puddings, 6 miles. The market town of Ashbourne, gateway to Dovedale is 9 miles and slightly further away is Buxton, the highest town in England 15 miles and the market town Chesterfield, 12 miles.. The cities of Derby and Nottingham are within easy travelling distance as is Manchester and the Trafford Centre.
